Afternoon Energy Boosts

Foods for an Energy Boost

If you want to beat the midafternoon slump, start first thing in the morning with a good-quality breakfast. (We lecture our kids about it, but how often do we take our own advice?) Most women should be eating about 300 to 400 calories for breakfast, and most men, about 500, says Sandon. Instead of coffee and half a Danish, try these options:

  • A bowl of cereal with skim milk and a glass of juice or piece of fresh fruit
  • Two slices of toast with peanut butter and a banana
  • An English muffin topped with a scrambled egg and a slice of low-fat cheese

"You need carbs to get your day going," says Sandon. "The brain and muscles function best with carbohydrates to fuel them. And we know from other research that adding some protein to the carbs seems to boost concentration levels as well. You feel better, mentally and physically, when you've had a meal that combines carbs and protein."

Sufficiently fueled by breakfast, you might feel like it's OK to skip lunch or "just grab a salad" because you don't have time or are trying to lose weight. "That's a huge mistake people make at lunch -- just having a salad with lettuce and a few vegetables," says Sandon. "They don't have protein with the salad, and then again they find themselves crashing in the midafternoon."

So if you're cruising through the salad bar at lunchtime, top the greens with some diced egg, beans or chickpeas, turkey breast, or cubed chicken to give yourself that protein fix. Or smear some peanut butter on your celery sticks.

And avoid lunches that are heavy in fat; they take longer to digest and sit in your stomach, feeling heavy longer. "That gives you a sense of low energy," Sandon says. "The calories may be there to provide fuel, but the feeling of fullness leads you to feel sluggish."

More Energy-Boosting Tips

But what if it's too late to prevent the energy slump? You chugged down a latte for breakfast, ate a skimpy salad for lunch, and now you're drooping over your afternoon reports. What can you do for a quick energy boost? Resist the temptation to hit the vending machines for a Diet Coke and a Snickers. Instead, try Sandon's three-part solution:

  1. Get moving. Take a brisk walk, or better yet, find the staircase in your office building and do five or six flights to get your blood pumping and your body warmed up. In addition, taking your mind off what you've been focused on and getting a quick change of scenery (yes, even if it's a stairwell instead of a computer screen) can help to re-energize you. If you don't have a staircase handy, try doing some squats and lunges in your office, or keep a jump rope on the back of your door. "You want anything that gets you breathing a little quicker and moving the muscles," Sandon says.
  2. Get wet. Take a drink of water, that is (don't pour it over yourself). "A big glass of cold water -- bottled, tap, or fountain, it doesn't matter -- can really refresh you," says Sandon. "Adding a slice of lemon or lime can also perk you up."
  3. Get fueled. "If you weren't fortified well at breakfast and lunch, you need to take a moment and have a snack," Sandon says. Good options include fresh fruit, trail mix with nuts, or whole-wheat crackers with string cheese. If you have to go to the vending machine, look for peanut butter crackers, a nice carb-protein combination.

Another option: shed some light on the subject. A study published in 2006 found that brief (about 20 minutes) exposure to a bright white light increased alertness and boosted the brain's responses." Melatonin can't be produced in the presence of bright light," Breus tells WebMD. "If you know you usually feel sleepy around 2:30 or 3 p.m., go out for a walk around 2:15."

What about closing your door and taking a nap? It's tempting. "Catnaps are great -- unless you have insomnia. There's evidence now showing that the last time you were asleep affects how long it takes you to fall asleep at night," says Breus. But if you aren't struggling to sleep at night, a quick catnap can help with that energy crash midafternoon. Just don't sleep too long! The length of the nap will determine how good you feel. About 20 minutes works quite well, but much longer than that and you will wake up feeling terrible."

Cheap and Healthy: 15 Nutritious Foods for About $2

Cheap and Healthy: 15 Nutritious Foods for About $2

A grocery list to help you cut food prices while you boost nutrition.
By Elaine Magee, MPH, RD
WebMD Expert Column

How do you eat a nutritious diet while keeping your grocery budget low? The good news is that cheap food isn't necessarily unhealthy food. You can cut food costs by eating more meals at home, and by making sure they feature some of the healthiest foods from your supermarket - foods like whole grains, vegetables, and beans. Luckily, many of these foods cost less than $2 per package.

A 2-pound bag of brown rice, for example, sells for less than $2 and cooks up into about 20 side servings -- that's just 10 cents a serving. Talk about nutrition on the cheap! Check out the list below for more examples.

Prices may vary based on the store, location, and time of year.

mgis (MEDICAL GROUP INSURANCE SERVICES, INC)

Signed up for this "service" in July, filed a claim August 1 and have no reimbursement yet.

85 days later.

As a result of their incompetence I have had to pay over $530 in fees, unable to make two car payments, and not one of 30 plus people i have spoken with during the last 85 days i have been trying to get paid bothered to apologize.

Oh, what to do? What to do?

File a complaint with the Attorney General's Office and Department of Insurance!!

The great state of Massachusetts does take kindly to liars whom withdrawal money from paychecks and refuse to reimburse based on the contract....

*********************************************************************************

To MEDICAL GROUP INSURANCE SERVICES, INC:

Under the provisions of Massachusetts General Laws, Chapter 93A, Section 9, I hereby make written demand for relief as outlined in that statute. On or about 8/1/2008, I filed a claim via fax with your reimbursement center and this claim has been accepted by mgis. Since then the following unfair or deceptive act has continued, as I do not have my reimbursement yet and my payments to mgis are still being taken out of my paycheck. Per our FSA contract I should be reimbursed for all accepted charges in a timely manner and instead the claim filed with mgis on 8/1/2008 has to this day, 80 days later, the claim has not been paid.

This unfair or deceptive act or practice is, in my opinion, declared unlawful by Section 2 of Chapter 93A of Massachusetts General Laws. As a result of this unfair or deceptive act or practice, I suffered injury or loss of money as follows:

1. Resulting monetary penalties by other companies to me as a result of my loss of monies which mgis has refused to reimburse. The current total of penalties and fees as of today, that will not be final until I am paid, is $460.

2. Detrimental credit issues because of mgis refusing to reimburse me.

Therefore, I hereby demand the following relief:

1. Immediate termination of contract and termination of pre-tax direct debit withdrawals from my paycheck by mgis or it’s agents.

2. Reimbursement of all monies withdrawn from my check and not used by me for medical expenses.

3. Reimbursement of subsequent charges I have been forced to incur due to negligence by mgis totaling as of 10/20/08, starting 9/24/08, of $460. This amount will increase as each day passes in which I am not reimbursed.

Chapter 93A gives you the opportunity to make a good-faith response to this letter within thirty days of the date on this letter. Your failure to do so-could subject you to triple damages, attorney’s fees and costs if I decide to institute legal action.

Sincerely,

Slumlord Update...Ballo Loses in Court AGAIN!!

Well the waltham slumlord extrodinare, Phil Ballo of Ballo Real Estate Services on Trapelo Road 02452, refused to fix the fire hazard of an stove then filed a false eviction case once fined by the waltham health department and MA fire marshall. His tactic was to hire a lawyer whom also represents the city of waltham (later post to discuss those ethical issues being heard by the ma state bar association). Phil Ballo and the slimy lawyer lost the eviction case, it was dismissed for not having cause. I filed for damages as his false claim is clear retaliation (MA General Law Chapter 138 Sec 14b) which is a criminal offense and he lost.

Twice Phil the slumlord and his slimy lawyer lost in court to a GIRL WITH NO LAW DEGREE!!

I, not being a native of Ma, am just amazed at some people their issues!!

******************************************************

My advise...
  • If you can stay away from Phil Ballo/Ballo Real Estate Services to avoid these issues.
  • If you already live there call WATCH and the city of Waltham...see earlier posts for issues you do not have to live with and conditions that you can make him fix.

******************************************************

Considering how our elected "representatives" screwed us in "fixing" our economy, it's nice to win one for the little guy!!

alternative remedies for pain

Capsaicin: For arthritis, shingles, or neuropathy

What the science says: An active component of chile pepper, capsaicin temporarily desensitizes pain-prone skin nerve receptors called C-fibers; soreness is diminished for 3 to 5 weeks while they regain sensation. Nearly 40 percent of arthritis patients reduced their pain by half after using a topical capsaicin cream for a month, and 60 percent of neuropathy patients achieved the same after 2 months, according to a University of Oxford study. Patients at the New England Center for Headache decreased their migraine and cluster headache intensity after applying capsaicin cream inside their nostrils.

How to try it: Capsaicin ointments and creams are sold in pharmacies and health stores. For arthritis or neuropathy, try 0.025 percent or 0.075 percent capsaicin cream one to four times daily; best results can take up to 2 weeks, says Philip Gregory, PharmD, a professor at Creighton University and editor of the Natural Medicines Comprehensive Database. But research on capsaicin and headaches remains limited — and don't expect stronger versions anytime soon: "Current formulations are better suited for more acute problems, like a sore muscle or an arthritis flare-up, than everyday pain and stiffness," Gregory says.

InflaThera or Zyflamend: For arthritis

What the science says: Both supplement brands contain ginger, turmeric, and holy basil, all of which have anti-inflammatory properties. Turmeric (a curry ingredient) may be the best: A component, curcumin, eases inflammatory conditions like rheumatoid arthritis and psoriasis, according to the Methodist Research Institute in Indianapolis. Researchers are now testing Zyflamend in RA patients, but some experts are already sold: "Each herb has its own scientific database of evidence," says James Dillard, MD, author of "The Chronic Pain Solution."

How to try it: ProThera, InflaThera's maker, will only sell to health care professionals, so your doctor has to order it for you; that said, it's reportedly stronger (and slightly cheaper) than Zyflamend. InflaThera's suggested dosage is twice daily with food. For the more readily accessible Zyflamend, take one capsule two or three times daily, but avoid it near bedtime — each pill contains 10 mg of caffeine (another version, Zyflamend PM, is reportedly less stimulating). Buy Zyflamend at swansonvitamins.com or immunesupport.com/zyflamend.htm. Or, save money and try curcumin to start: Taking 500 mg four times daily, along with fish oil and a diet low in animal fat, can ease arthritis, says Jane Guiltinan, ND, immediate past president of the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians.

Arnica: For acute injury or post surgery swelling

What the science says: This herb comes from a European flower; although its healing mechanism is still unknown, it does have natural anti-inflammatory properties. Taking oral homeopathic arnica after a tonsillectomy decreases pain, say British researchers, and German doctors found that it reduces surgery-related knee swelling.

How to try it: Use homeopathic arnica as an adjunct to ice, herbs, or conventional pain meds, suggests Guiltinan. Rub arnica ointment on bruises or strained muscles, or take it in the form of three lactose pellets under the tongue up to six times per day. Boiron is among the most reputable arnica manufacturers.

Aquamin: For osteoarthritis

What the science says: This red seaweed supplement is rich in calcium and magnesium. A preliminary clinical study showed that the ingredients may reduce joint inflammation or even help build bone, says David O'Leary of Marigot, Aquamin's Irish manufacturer. In a study of 70 volunteers published in Nutrition Journal, Aquamin users reduced arthritis pain by 20 percent in a month, and had less stiffness than patients taking a placebo.

How to try it: Marigot recommends 2,400 mg a day (two capsules) of Aquamin in tablet form, sold domestically in products such as Aquamin Sea Minerals and Cal-Sea-Um. A 60-pill jar of Swanson Vegetarian Aquamin Sea Minerals costs about $6 at swansonvitamins.com.

AM-e (S adenosylmethionine): For osteoarthritis

What the science says: SAM-e is made from a naturally occurring amino acid and sold as capsules. Doctors aren't entirely sure why it tamps down pain, but it reduces inflammation and may increase the feel-good brain chemicals serotonin and dopamine.

Studies by the University of Maryland School of Nursing and the University of California, Irvine, showed that SAM-e was as effective as some NSAIDs in easing osteoarthritis aches; the California researchers found that SAM-e quashed pain by 50 percent after 2 months, though it took a few weeks to kick in. SAM-e produced no cardiovascular risks and fewer stomach problems than the conventional meds.

How to try it: Costco and CVS both carry it; a month's supply costs $30 to $60. Guiltinan prescribes 400 to 1,600 mg daily, often with turmeric or fish oil. SAM-e can interact with other meds, especially MAO-inhibitor antidepressants, so it's vital to talk with your doctor before taking it (and avoid SAM-e entirely if you have bipolar disorder).

Also, inspect the packaging before buying, advises Gregory: Make sure the product carries a USP or GMP quality seal, contains a stabilizing salt, has a far-off expiration date, and comes in foil blister packs — SAM-e can degrade rapidly in direct light.

Fish oil: For joint pain from arthritis or autoimmune disorders

What the science says: Digested fish oil breaks down into hormonelike chemicals called prostaglandins, which reduce inflammation. In one study, about 40 percent of rheumatoid arthritis patients who took cod-liver oil every day were able to cut their NSAID use by more than a third, Scottish scientists recently reported. People with neck and back pain have fared even better: After about 10 weeks, nearly two-thirds were able to stop taking NSAIDs altogether in a University of Pittsburgh study.

How to try it: Taking 1,000 mg is proven to help your heart, but you should up the dose for pain. For osteoarthritis, try 2,000 to 4,000 mg daily; for rheumatoid arthritis and autoimmune diseases associated with joint pain (such as lupus), consider a much higher dose of upwards of 8,000 mg daily — but ask your doctor about such a large amount first, says Tanya Edwards, MD, medical director at the Cleveland Clinic's Center for Integrative Medicine. (The same rule applies if you take BP or heart meds, as omega-3s can thin the blood.) Read the nutrition label carefully: The dosage refers to the amount of omega-3s in a capsule, not other ingredients. Nordic Naturals (nordicnaturals.com) and Carlson (carlsonlabs.com) are both reputable brands; for something stronger, GNC's Triple-Strength Fish Oil (gnc.com) has 900 mg of omega-3s per capsule.

Methylsulfonyl-methane (MSM): For osteoarthritis

What the science says: MSM is derived from sulfur and may prevent joint and cartilage degeneration, say University of California, San Diego, scientists. People with osteoarthritis of the knee who took MSM had 25 percent less pain and 30 percent better physical function at the end of a 3-month trial at Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine and Health Sciences. Indian researchers also found that MSM worked better when combined with glucosamine.

How to try it: Start with 1.5 to 3 g once daily and increase to 3 g twice daily for more severe pain, suggests Leslie Axelrod, ND, a professor of clinical sciences at Southwest. Patients in the Indian trial improved on dosages as low as 500 mg three times daily. Vendors of OptiMSM, the brand tested in Axelrod's trial, can be found at optimsm.com.

Frenemies & Dating

A friend who feeds you negativity isn't a friend, but a frenemy. A frenemy may be chipping away your dating potential without you even being aware of it. Ask yourself, do any of these incidents sound familiar?
  • A "best friend" takes an instant dislike to a date you really like
  • A friend insists that all the "good ones" are taken
  • A sister/brother reminds you of your past failures or the duds you've fallen for
  • Dad criticizes any date you bring around
  • Mom clucks about how men/women would find you more attractive if you only lost those 10 pounds
  • Your two closest friends flake on the first dinner party you're hosting with your date
These are typical behaviors of friends-turned-frenemies.

Here are four steps to use to handle frenemies and protect your love life:

Step 1: Uncover frenemies
Who do you spend the most time with socially? Regarding the people close to you, answer the following questions:
  • Are they single? Are they in a relationship? If so, do they generally describe it as loving or not?
  • Do you feel good hanging around them? How do you feel right after being with them?
  • Are they supportive of your self-esteem and attractiveness?
  • What are their attitudes towards love or relationships in general?
  • How do they react when you're in a relationship?

Step 2: Stop your whining
Often you are unconsciously encouraging your frenemies to be negative by complaining to them about what is wrong with your love life. For three days, take a notebook and make a note of every time you complain to anyone. For the next three days complain to no one. Write about how this feels.

Step 3: Make a list of what you need from frenemies
For example, you may need your best friend to stop complaining about how awful men/women are. You may need your dad/mom to tell you what he/she really likes about your new date.

Step 4: Ask your frenemies to give you the support you need
Be straight and honest.
Tell them you want to have a positive outlook about love and you need them to be positive too. Most will respond. With the few frenemies who resist and continue being negative, move to a more distant, yet polite, relationship with them. You have to protect yourself and your own hopeful outlook on love.
Anyone can make a mistake and can turn frenemy on you. But if this does happen, follow these steps, and you will find that you can turn things back around so that you have a truly supportive posse. And by the way, if you and your wonderful posse would like to see if your dating patterns are more like Carrie, Samantha, Charlotte, or Miranda, take my free quiz at ww.mydatingpatterns.com.

Chronic Aches and Pains??

I was blessed enough to have natural athletic abilities and many found childhood memories of sports and being outside. As i grew up I also became competitive and made decisions to play games when my body had not fully recovered. Add in a few more years of an active lifestyle and years in front of a computer, suddenly I have some chronic aches and pains in my knees and ankles. Although I do enjoy being able to predict a rainstorm I have also found that with some simple lifestyle changes I can reduce the pain before it beings. As the pain comes from muscle stiffness which is a result of inflammation the logic thing to do is reduce the inflammation. Magnesium has been my savior and very easy to add to my diet.

The article below has some other interesting information....

*******************************************************

Arthritis is a common, debilitating disorder that affects nearly one in three adults in the United States (Arthritis Foundation, 2005), and is usually classified by an inflammation of the joints. This inflammation leads to stiffness, pain, instability and weakness in the body that generally worsens with age. Unfortunately, anti inflammatory drugs only mask the problem.

Arthritis-related inflammation is usually treated with a combination of natural anti inflammatory solutions, such as supplements, rest, exercise, stretching and an anti inflammatory diet, or with prescription or over-the-counter medications. Frequently, a combination of both natural and physician-prescribed treatments are used to reduce the symptoms.

Non Steroidal Anti Inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs) are the most widely used anti inflammatory drugs recommended by physicians to treat arthritis today. However, these drugs are often associated with adverse side effects, some of which can be quite serious.

NSAIDs decrease the production of a prostaglandin that protects the stomach lining. This allows the acids in the stomach to erode the lining, thereby resulting in bleeding and ulcers.

NSAIDs also have anti-clotting effects, which result in increased bleeding or bruising. Mouth sores, skin rashes, headaches, dizziness, drowsiness and ringing in the ears are all other common side effects related to this class of anti inflammatory drugs. Not everyone who takes NSAIDs will experience adverse events; however, they have been observed in the clinical setting.

In light of the fact that many people have experienced negative reactions to NSAIDs and other anti inflammatory drugs, many are now turning to natural anti inflammatory options to alleviate their arthritis pain.

One of the easiest ways to alleviate the pain and discomfort caused by arthritis and inflammation naturally (without the assistance of drugs) is to follow an anti inflammatory diet. This includes avoiding white flour, excessive sugar and refined carbohydrates. These diets also suggest incorporating more produce (fruit and vegetables) and lean meat (fish and chicken) into your diet and limiting the amount of processed or packaged foods that you consume.

Diets rich in omega-3 fatty oils - found in many type of nuts, fatty/oily fish, and pumpkin seeds - are a great way to alleviate some of the inflammation discomfort naturally.

Additionally, when following an anti inflammatory diet, it's important to ensure that the body receives an adequate amount of water to keep it hydrated. Hydration will help lubricate joints and reduce some of the pain caused from inflammation.

There are other natural anti inflammatory solutions that have also proven successful in many people who've had a less-than-ideal experience with prescription or over the counter anti inflammatory drugs.

Certain herbs - including turmeric, rosemary and ginger have all shown to consist of natural anti inflammatory qualities. Similarly, many vitamins, including A and E can decrease the pain and inflammation in arthritis sufferers, as well as the sulfur derivative, MSM.

Anti inflammatory drugs may be successful at temporarily relieving some of the pain and inflammation caused by arthritis. However, they will not correct the underlying cause of the inflammation that exists within the body.

By substituting drugs with natural treatments - including following an anti inflammatory diet - the body will be nourished with nutrients, vitamins and other herbs that it may be missing.

Take a positive step in improving your health and your arthritis symptoms & educate yourself about the benefits of natural anti inflammatory agents and begin to relieve your arthritis naturally.

Learning to Deal

Success in life come from being able to evolve through problems using mistakes as learning experiences forcing internal evolution of the soul.

Quite a grand statement from someone who is no one. But I disagree, I am a unique individual whom in midlife is an product of two children of the 60's, married alcoholics in the 70's, divorced alcoholics in the 80's, and still ranting in 2008. Survival alone until the age of adultness was, I am told by many, an accomplishment by itself.

However instead I took the time to get away, explore & acclimate with "normal" society, all be it alone and with no job skills or drivers license. Through many years of bad decisions I managed to take out loans & work to get through a bachelors degree and, with the help of angels that are my friends, a 'real job' in ten years.

Now I face tasks, like many my age, of beginning to take on the responsibility of my life
and my parents welfare. Not their life but partially their well being as they have done and still do for me separately and passively bitching about each other.

Which brings me back to 'being able to evolve through problems making mistakes into learning experiences and forcing internal evolution' to solve life's problems/hurdles/speed bumps/bad decisions. Leading me to provide the conclusion that the sucess comes from how you deal with problems.

"GrownUp" Summer Vacation

One benefit of my good job is that I get a decent amount of vacation time. However this has nothing to do with anything I say from now on.

Unfortunately in some states like Massachusetts and Arizona being an horrible person is taken to a new level. In Arizona they are the white people and in Massachusetts they are massholes. I have found when stuck around people that take toxic to a new level the really only way to survive is to return the behavior. As I do not usually act in a manner understood by these people I have intentionally allowed myself this "vacation" to spend quality time instigating karma.

Best example is a common living situation post-college a few years entrenched in student loans, car payments, rent, plus an active lifestyle living under a slumlord. the entrance tot he building is saturated in urine and reeks all afternoon as the sunshine's on it. mold growing in the filter of the air filter. holes around the faucets in the shower. no parking and a lot where cars get damaged, especially new ones. just a general all around dirty bastard.

Interesting as these are not usually smart people yet from coping people that are smart these stupid people being to think they are smart. This is actually fun as a smart person and the trick to be able to spot these people and let them beat themselves...as that is what stupid people do

BEAT THEMSELVES

Information is your greatest asset, which smart people know, and gathering this information is the key to winning. A general IQ above room temperature is helpful also. But to even relate to the situation...and be honest about what side of the above situation you are on!

Irony is the best part of life just behind KARMA.

I wish every human their full and total karma, it is the first step towards peace.

Slumlord Update...Phil Ballo

So now the time has expired when i should have a safe stove that works properly however in typical PhilBallostyle I do not.

Sadly each tenant I meet, has a similar story to share and each is horrible in it's own way.

Absolutely amazing that this behavior is allowed to continue.

While driving West on Mass Pike

As I came up a hill at sunset on Thursday July 10th about 8pm I noticed the light changing in the middle of the wide open road head of me. As the sun was directly in front the road was only visible for about 20 feet ahead.

I slowed down as I thought there might be traffic but saw no brake lights. Suddenly I see a car sitting in the middle of the two lanes on Mass Pike, just past 84, with no flashing lights, brake lights, or lights of any kind. The car was just sitting in park in the middle of the road completely alone.

Because of a power greater than I, my car did stop in time leaving less than a foot to spare between myself and the "driver" in front of me. The other cars in the long line of traffic charging behind me were not so lucky as most ran off the mountain road.

Once the crashing began the "driver" in front of me moved forward.

Slumlord Update...Phil Ballo

Based on the health code violations and being an honest person I had to call my insurance agent and inform her with regard to the renters insurance.

So now not only do I have live with a fire hazard that prevents me from being able to cook in my apartment, I also cannot insure my possessions because Phil Ballo, the post turtle, is violating the law.

Hopefully the building won't burn down so I will still have my stuff.

Truth on the Internet, Part II --> CitySearch.com

As stated in my previous post CitySearch is unwilling to allow any posting about malpractice information. To this day I cannot log in or create another account.

Be aware the information on CitySearch is not the complete story and if you ask me NOT TRUE!!

To find a doctor use a service that tells the truth.

Check with state medical boards and get a referral.

Only one example of a slumload...This one is Phil Ballo

As I a cannot speak about the Ballo family as a whole, I do have the experience of residing a building that Phil Ballo "manages". The one bedroom apartment I live in is quaint, reasonable size, and very quiet surrounded by wonderful neighbors. I have great access to laundry facilities and usually well maintained grounds.

Over the two years there are been some issues which were inconvenient such as the dryer failing, bathroom ceiling caving in during a plumbing leak, and then the issue of the oven sparking fire that burned a whole through the metal part of the stove near the knobs.

In the last eight or so months since this initial incident I have called and the stove has been "fixed" three times. Each time ofcourse leaving gupy sticky drag marks from the oven being moved to be worked on. Which is typical as when the bathroom ceiling was fixed I had to clean that up also. Finally I decide to ignore it and then had surgery so my mother was here to help and she about flipped.

Again Phil acknowledges the problem and claims to "fix" it which delays the next sparking incident for only a few weeks. I wait a few weeks hoping this time the man would actually BE ENOUGH of a man to do what he said and fix the problem.

Finally I get smart and call the city health department as the oven was sparking and not keeping temperature. I send Phil a heads up, in hope of last minute action which worked on the last slumlord Giovanni Curuso, but instead I turn my air conditioner on that night and it reeks of that juice at the bottom of a garbage can on a humid day. He calls me that Saturday to tell me this at 5pm but as the note said only action would solve the issue. Two days later the health department did not even make me turn the oven on, instead after visual observation declared a health/fire code violation. I was told not to turn it on.

Day after the health code violation arrives in the mail, I come home to find MORE gupy drag marks through my kitchen. The entire counter dishevoled and some sort of wattage meter was on the counter. And he took the note I left about the air conditioner but never fixed that either. The next day I returned to find my note about reasonable notice of entrance was gone and that the entire side of the kitchen where the stove was did not have any power. So again I sent a note informing him of my reason for not paying rent the following month. But it was a Friday night so I was happy to just not here from him and enjoyed a weekend free of cooking PLUS eating out on him.

Sunday at 7pm a note is left at my door informing me of work beginning in the morning address me with the incorrect name and address. And yet again I left a note that the that standard notice for entrance in 24hrs and reminding him again of what my phone number is.

This time I arrive home to more gupy stickiness and two hours later a note is left for me. Slide under the door while I am home claiming he was never informed about any problems and he is not responsible for any inconvenience. Absolutely amazing the way some people can lie, cheat, steal, bully then get caught and STILL think they are doing the right thing.

Makes me wonder these people bullies or people who were bullied?

How to Deal with a SlumLord like Phil Ballo

This society of medicority has enable many many incompetant jerks and massachusetts does it best, no question. In Waltham, MA the king is one of the most popular slumlords in town Phil Ballo of Ballo Family Trust.

A year ago my stove caught on fire and Phil told me he'd fix it needless to say a year later I had to call the Waltham Board of Health to get Phil out of his chair at FoxWoods to DO HIS JOB!!

Here are two sample letters to the Waltham Board of Health which you could use as a template if in a similar situation.

************************************************************************
Good Morning Waltham Board of Health.

I came home to find a huge sticky guey mess on my floor in the shape of drag marks from the stove being moved. Two hours later I received a note under my door stating that the "fire hazard" of an oven will not be replaced but instead the same part that caught on fire was replaced. The note states that the Board of Health involvement made the stove repair an "emergency" and that is why the repair was done without proper notification. The note went on to demand rent in full for this month and refused to allow me any repayment of my monies I have been forced to spend to eat as I have been unable to prepare food in my apartment for six days as of today. Note continues to lie about having tried to call me and I have my phone records to prove it as I have repeatedly provide my correct phone number.

Please advise on any further action needed on my part to bring my apartment into health code and fire safety compliance. Also I am now having complications with my renters insurance due to this situation and need replacement stove immediately.

Have a good day,

*********************************************************************

Hi Waltham Board of Health,

Thanks for the return call Monday and I did get your notice in the mail. Thank
you.

Just wanted to check in as I came home today to find some sort of electrical
meter in my apartment kitchen on the counter and the fuse box open. I have not
received any calls about work being done or a working stove being installed.
However the stove is still not fixed plus now the burners or outlets in the
stove are not able to be used. If anything else happens, I will let you know.

Also now that I do not have any kind of stove I am going to hold onto the rent
until I do have a working stove as that is my understanding of my rights.

Thanks again and have a good day,

Do you need help?? How do you know?? Who do you ask??

Just found this great new site where in just a couple clicks a user can post a question to a expert for their opinion FOR FREE. Find out first if it's worth a second medical opinion or a trip to interview a lawyer.

My question and answer is below.

Answered Question

Subject mistake or malpractice?
Question Hi,

I went in for a crown two years ago and ended up with a hole drilled into my skull. In order to suture the hole in my soft palette my jaw had to be forced and held open.

Today I still have daily jaw pain which I am told by experts at Tufts Craniofacial Pain Clinic will not go away ever even with dental appliances. And now I have to get the crown replaced for the third time.

Obviously there are more details, but why am I paying for the treatment? Is this malpractice?

Thanks.

Answer Yes.

You probably have two defendants, that is if two dentists worked on you. The first dentist who went through the skull, actually the top of your mouth (I forget what that is called, palate?) that required clamping your jaws open so you got (I guess) a temporo/mandibular injury. It is this second manipulation that is causing your pain. I wonder what the extent of injury is that the Pain Clinic people think can not be helped. Well, if you file a lawsuit and get a good dental malpractice lawyer, you may learn more about your injury. You hear of treatment for that temporo/mandibular pain so you should not give up hope for that. It has a well known set of signs.

Your lawyer should start out with a dental and facial surgery expert, that is a special expert within the dental profession, and you may get some help from him. Be sure your lawyer knows what the Tufts people said.

Ask your local Bar Association for a list of dental malpractice lawyers. Sometimes they are listed in the Yellow Pages, but start with the Bar Ass'n. You should not have too much trouble finding a lawyer because pain that can not be 'cured' is worth some bucks. Even a jury will probably see that you are in trouble.

If you think your doctor goofed, chances are he did.

You are the only one responsible for your care...

Since August 2006 I have lived each day with constant pain in my head, neck, jaw, and throat. I have swallowed a horrible drainage all day long and listened to my right ear pop everytime I inhale, exhale, or swallow.

I have gone to doctors consistently since this first began reporting the same symptoms and follow through on every thing they have told me. Finally I found a "House"-like dentist who didn't take my lawsuit into her diagnoses and the problem is now identified.

For twenty months doctors have made diagnostic suggestions because the infection under my crown and TMD symptoms couldn't be separated. Once the TMD was being treated the symptoms left clearly showed and infection under a crown causing muscular issues, popping/swelling in my right ear, and drainage into my throat. And it took her about 10 minutes.

Lesson being no matter how many people comment on how many doctors you consult, keep going until you know that the proper diagnoses is found.

You are the only one whom will live in pain, loose your job, loose sleep, not be able to participate in sports or socializations, go into debt, etc, etc, etc.

And never forget the doctors are worried about their well being NOT YOURS!

Truth on the Internet

Everyone is aware that some of what is on the internet is not true. Some of the "real" movies are fake, avatars look nothing like thier owner, and there is information displayed on web pages that is either false or emotionally inflated.

However I have always relied on the sites which allow users to share their opinions. I do much research on just about everything online but stick with known sites as I tend to have more faith in their accuracy. This is why I wanted to speak out about this issue as I has found CitySearch to be a dishonest company.

There is the story...first I wrote a review of a "medical professional" about eight months ago. This "medical professional" physically violated me then laughed in my face. The insurance company insisted that I return to this "medical professional" under the threat of me having to pay both bills. Citysearch had my review posted for eight months and suddenly two weeks ago decided they would not allow to share this information. Funny how when I check their site about this "medical professional" there are other reviews stating the same thing...not from me.

What horrible people to help this butcher of a "medical professional"...same thing as hiding a child rapist.

Women in Technology, the truth

Women in Technology

Thoughts from a women working in the technology industry for women coming into it

I have been working or studying the high-end technology field since 1998 when I began by designing websites for DARPA. Since then I have been involved in many stereotypical situations from functioning in an industry dominated by men and their linear mentalities. I want to first stress that the following behavior I am referring to is not true to ALL men however is most definitely the popular reaction and behavior. Unfortunately the behavior is proof of the rise of ignorance and continued promotion of men by men to enable an emotionally secure situation that does not involve women.

Below is the latest and very common handling of projects and ‘acceptable’ office behavior. I have noted this not because I am shocked or upset as I have made my piece with having to work for and with ignorant bullies. But instead I want to share this information with others to read so it is very clear that many strides have been made to equate women and men. We are not done and still, just like with the KKK, the ignorant ‘boys network’ is alive, strong, and growing.

In my position I have accomplished many things in the two years I have been at the small firm I work for in central ma. My accomplishments have been met with attitude, slander, and emotional tantrums in the office all of which have been ignored by the executive. Further when I have initiated a conversation with the executives about the behavior the response was that I should “stand up for myself”. When I do confront the ignorant males behaving this way the response is to loudly belittle me as a sensitive female as I object to being called incompetent by a mid-level manager while the CTO appoints me into more prominent roles with a greater responsibilities. Just a few of my accomplishments have included expanding the technology and generating more tools for the software development team, increasing production by 300% in 8 months, retaining customers creating a long term relationship, driving the sales team by taking on the responsibility of creating sales tools the marketing department is not able to do, and many other smaller projects.

I am hoping not to convince women to looking for other industries but instead to properly inform other women of the daily issues that will be faced while trying to function in the technology industry. The most important factors in the level of these issues are the corporate culture of the company, which is hard to understand with out being involved in companies daily activates. As there is no way to avoid these issues all together having discussions about the diversity of employees and makeup of the management team. Research is the best preventative strategy understanding the sad fact that people do not change. So if anyone has clearly been held accountable for behavior like this there is no doubt the behavior will continue.

Timeline

4/18 Emailed that model was complete and exported

4/21 I QA’d the model, sent notice to Technical Lead and Modeler that model had passed QA about noon. Response from Technical Lead was told that Product was not on my schedule for the week and I should work on my assignments instead

4/22 Model re-exported.

Technical Lead informed me that I should now work on the model, no other information available. Animations done per my best guess as any direction was withheld and no information from the customer was provided.

4/23 Finished animation of model per the studio images as no other information was available and Technical Lead told me nothing. Instead barked from behind that I did not include animations that I was told to. Next learned that no content was available and no definitions of animations outlined in contract were available.

4/24 No information was available on animations or photographs of different configuration that the device was suppose to be animated into. Checked Customer website but there was no image there and none taken during photography. Involved Director of Operations, as I could not complete animations until this information was available. Sent list of needed information to Technical Lead …never got a response. Sent update before leaving for the day that animations were being completed per my conversation with Sales Executive, as it was the only information given to me. Finally got the content and current requests from customers from Sales Executive, as Technical Lead & Customer Service Manager have provided no information in response to many requests. COB 80% done.

4/25 Finished up animations per my interpretation of content form and my conversation with Sales Executive. Barked at from behind about customer requests I was informed about around 2pm while deadline was COB. Finished up animation QA and sent finished product over to Programmer for implementation 3pm. Response was that I had done something wrong animation the same part multiple times as bellowed across the office. At that point I went over and explained there were two parts that were essentially the same but one was 1” and the other was 2”. Next Programmer involved UI Designer whom had never communicated about any UI needs. UI Designer’s snotty reaction was to bark across the office that I “screwed up the template” to which I responded my multiple requests for information were ignored. The problem was easily fixed by pasting in a ui.jar file already created rather than having to recreate anything within the product tour. After a few minutes of arguing that I was not correct Director of Operations inserted himself into the conversation and both Programmer and UI Designer shut up long enough to try what I had explained multiple times was easily fixed by coping over a file and the boys tried it. After it worked I again attempted to return to my desk and continue work however was for a third time barked out by UI Designer who was now with a hand on a hip and swirling finger complained the background color was incorrect. To which I responded that I was never given a color value or access to anyone else’s files which is standard operating procedure. At that time I stopped work to explain to the meson programmer, Programmer, and the UI Designer that the background color in all meson models in defined in the mesonjar and again reiterated that none of this is the responsibility of a entry level technical animator. Regardless of the ignorance of employees or impotent communication ability of the Technical Lead any of these issues being raise less than hour before a deadline could not be more unacceptable. 3:45p I was sent content changes from Customer Service Manager.

Maybe it was the full moon

I drive to work on a daily basis I have MANY experiences on the roads of Metro West Boston. I am usually amazed at the driving decisions made by the general public which included almost being killed or watching someone else almost be killed on average 4 times a week. I have driven in 7 other states, including LA in California, and clearly Massachusetts is the worse.

On my way home on April 18 I was shocked while sitting at a light that had just turned green to watch two cars whom had the green light be crashed into by a car running a red light that did not even bother to attempt to use the brakes. Instead this car ran a red light hit the side of one car with so much force that both cars went into the other car in the intersection then went all the way to the cars stopped for the red light.

The most amazing part of the experience was that once the cars stopped moving the drivers all got out of their cars to asses the damage, one being a pregnant women (9 months pregnant—actually passed her due date). The cars around rather than stopping to help or even asking if everyone was ok started to honk because they could not proceed through the intersection. All the drivers got back in their cars and pulled to the side of the road to call the police and await their arrival.

NOT ONE PERSON got out to help the pregnant women or the man whose car was hit by the idiot who blew the red light. I went around the block to find a spot and drag the pregnant women out the street until the police arrived. Interestingly, the man who ran the red light originally asked everyone if they were alright but once the police arrived did not speak English anymore.

I have had many experiences since I moved to Massachusetts against the advise of everyone I knew because my thought was that people here cannot be as bad as the stories I have heard. So far in just over two years, I have been run off Route 2 heading west on 1/3/07 by a purple Jetta during AM rush hour traffic ending up 10 feet into the woods and no one stopped. I have had a hole drilled into my head by a dentist who then got verbally abusive when I complained about the pain. A landlord, Giovanni Caruso, whom refused to replace my stove that had been broke for four months and instead demanded rent then left the country for a vacation in Australia. (It was another two months before I got a new stove). Stuck with a neighbor whom, because he comes home drunk, leaves dents and scratches in my car then when I asked him to stop retaliated by threatening my 65-year-old mother while she was taking care of me after surgery to fix the hole that was drilled into my head. Woke up one Sunday morning to find that one of the local jerks decided to cause $1200 of damage to a 3-week-old car by scratching “Asshole James” into the back door. And finally, my personal favorite (note sarcasm here), while working for a small company in Maynard was verbal abused and physically threaten at my desk for doing nothing more than my job. The CTO thought it was funny that employee needed to be physically restrained and removed from the office and my manager told me “That people like me should learn how to deal with it”.

LESSON: If you’re not from MA and you don’t have the right last name….DON’T MOVE HERE!!

The ‘Masshole’ folklore is true, alive, and well.
